Our Practice in Thornhill

Dr. Deborah Lowy graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Doctor of Optometry in 1981. She received an award for academic excellence from the dean of the school. Her training included an internship at Huronia Regional Centre, serving mentally and physically disabled residents, and the Department of Ophthalmology at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem.

She opened up her own practice at Dufferin and Steeles in 1984 and has served the Thornhill, ON, community ever since. Giving back to the profession and the public is foremost.

Her interest led her to serve on the Complaints Committee at the College of Optometrists of Ontario from 2000–2007 and chair that committee from 2004–2007. She held a council position at the College of Optometrists for two 3-year terms. She was especially honoured to have received the Queen’s Jubilee medal for her work in third-world countries.

She has special interests in glaucoma, pediatrics, and complex contact lens fitting, including multifocals and keratoconus.

Dr. Lowy’s personal interests include travelling, decorating, reading, exercising, and cooking. She is married and has 2 adult sons; Jordan, a lawyer, and Jeremy, an optometrist with Lowy & Sewell Eye Care.

Dr. Jeremy Sewell graduated from the University of Guelph, where he obtained his Bachelor of Biological Sciences with Honours in 2007. Dr. Sewell obtained his Doctor of Optometry from Indiana University in 2015. 

His training included internships at Vision Care Specialist in Chicago, Illinois, WJB Dorn Veterans Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina, Indianapolis Eye Care Center in Indianapolis, Indiana, and Atwater Eye Care Center in Bloomington, Indiana.

During his Optometry studies, Dr. Sewell was involved in non-profit volunteer work. He provided screening eye exams at multiple homeless shelters for underprivileged persons in the Indianapolis area and at elementary schools in the Bloomington area. Dr. Sewell has special interests in retinal pathology, specialty contact lens fittings, and the treatment and management of acute red eye. 

When not working at his Thornhill, ON, eye clinic, Dr. Sewell enjoys travel, rock climbing, hockey and guitar.

Dr. Ken Wan OD, FAAO

Dr. Ken Wan is a residency-trained optometrist with a clinical focus on glaucoma and posterior segment disease. He earned his Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry & Vision Science, and completed his ocular disease residency at the Oklahoma Eye Institute through Northeastern State University of Oklahoma, where he received certification to perform anterior segment laser procedures. Dr. Wan is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, a distinction achieved by approximately 10% of optometrists in the United States.

Dr. Wan has made contributions to the optometry profession in various areas. He is involved in student education as a part-time clinical lecturer at the University of Waterloo and has participated in the Canadian Association of Optometry Students mentorship program. Dr. Wan has given lectures to students and fellow optometrists through various groups, including the American Academy of Optometry and EyeX.ca. He has written and published a case report for the journal “Clinical and Refractive Optometry” and is a peer reviewer for the journal “Optometry and Vision Science.” Dr. Wan has also completed the Clinical Investigator’s Course through the American Academy of Optometry.

When he’s not in the clinic, Dr. Wan enjoys gardening, reading and listening to science fiction and fantasy, and family time with his wife, daughter and two cats.

After graduating with from York University with her Bachelor of Science in 2019, Dr. Alissa Athanasakos obtained her Doctor of Optometry from the Michigan College of Optometry.

Dr. Athanasakos is a member of the Ontario College of Optometrists and the Ontario Association of Optometrists. She has her Student Fellowship from the American Academy of Optometry and is also a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa – International Optometric Honor Society.

Dr. Athanasakos chose her clinical rotations with an emphasis on ocular disease, completing her externships at a private practice in rural Ontario, the Wyoming Veteran Affairs Hospital and the Great Lakes Bay Health Centers in Michigan.

Accepting and providing eye care to all ages, Dr. Athanasakos is particularly interested in ocular disease, myopia control, dry eye management and contact lenses. She strives to create an approachable, and educational environment for her patients

Outside of the office, Dr. Athanasakos enjoys spending time outdoors, whether it’s hiking, camping or swimming. She enjoys travelling and spending time with family and friends.
