What’s there to see in North York?
Nature: North York comprises an area north of Toronto with many different neighborhoods, with beautiful nature sites scattered throughout. Edwards Gardens is one of our favorite places for genuine relaxation in the middle of the city; recline on a bench to gaze at the stunning floral gardens or stroll one of the renovated paths that are lined with wildflowers. The Toronto Botanical Garden, with 17 award-winning gardens, is another recommended attraction for anyone who loves being in the great outdoors. To explore the Don River, take a self-guided walk through the North York section. To get an authentic taste of the country, stop by the North York Farmers Market to sample locally-grown produce; it’s open from May to October.
Museums: We are lucky to have our share of marvelous museums in the North York area too. The Aga Khan Museum, museum of Islamic art and Muslim culture, features rotating exhibitions hosted in an architectural gem, surrounded by gorgeous landscaping. A variety of shows and performances are also held here. No mention of the regional museums is complete without citing the Ontario Science Centre, an iconic attraction for lifelong learning on technology and science. Don’t miss the IMAX Dome films shown here! History buffs should plan a day trip to Black Creek Pioneer Village, with 25 restored buildings from the 1860s set in a Victorian-era village. Educational and entertaining for all ages! Lovers of the fine arts are encouraged to explore the Art Gallery of York University, a public space with permanent and changing exhibits.
Shopping: Shoppers will also be excited by all the great North York retail destinations! Yorkdale Shopping Centre is the city’s premier mall, with more than 250 stores and a fantastic sampling of large shops and your favorite designer boutiques. For a smaller, high-end shopping experience, head to the Bayview Village Shopping Centre, a classy indoor mall. When the weather’s right, the Don Mills Shopping Centre is a pleasant outdoor retail area, with designer shops and restaurants arranged around a grassy city square.
